The picture a day project.

“Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day, I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.” ~Mary Jean Irion

It all started a few years ago, when I followed several photographers’ projects and dreamed about one day having the commitment to do one of my own. I have to admit I was to chicken to take it. I’m one of those persons that if I say I’m doing something I really mean it and I knew it was not going to be an easy task and I didn’t want to fail, so the easiest way was to just don’t do it.

As I’ve posted before, 2009 was a super busy year and I was upset at how much I missed of my kids, my day to day with them.. so as I was thinking about it on January 1st, 2010 I snapped a picture and decided to just do it. I never thought I’d get so much into it that now I’m finishing my 3rd year and I don’t see an end to it. It has made me a better mommy too, I don’t think I’ll be able to stop any time soon.

Yes, I have my camera with me all the time. No, my kiddos don’t care at all.. sometimes they do ask why I take pictures of everything but when I’m not taking a picture they actually ask for it. You can say that I’m obsessed.. maybe? ┬ábut even now, I look back to the pictures and it makes my heart happy.. The kiddos LOVE to look at the books I’ve created with the pictures and I know, a few years down the road they’ll love them even more.

The project has grown so much that it has its own blog now, there are days where I take more than one picture and I needed a place to share and save the memories so I came up with GrethelVanEpps365days for it, I love when people tells me they see what I post, I love to get comments and while sometimes it’s a bit funny I do enjoy getting stopped at the grocery store by moms who follow my adventures and call my kiddos by name (we live in a little town).. :) And to top it up, I’ve gotten paid for some of it!!.. seriously not even in my wild dreams.

So here I am, challenging you to do your own, to save those memories for your kids, grand kids and so on.. I can promise you that you wont regret it.

Here are a few tips that have helped me:

* have your camera ready ( or your phone! nothing wrong with phone pictures )

* don’t try to get “the” picture.. get the moment, the memory you want to remember.

* organize your pictures in monthly folders and one extra folder with the picture of the day. Believe me it’s so much easier to just upload the “picture of the day” folder when you are ready to put your book together than looking around everywhere to see where it was saved the one for the day.

* name the picture of the day with the Date of the day.

* have fun with it. Your photography skills will improve, the way you see your day to day life will improve, your patience with your kids will improve too.. it’s seriously a win win here.

So this is how our year looks so far.. for a BIGGER version go HERE
